WA: Horse trainer trying to lift ban.

A West Australian horse trainer is appealing against a two-year ban linked to a trialin which jockey JASON OLIVER died.

Yesterday stewards disqualified STEVE WOLFE'S licence for allowing his two-year-oldcolt Savage Cabbage to trial with the substance Phenylbutazone in its system.

The horse suffered a compound fracture to its foreleg during a 400-metre barrier trialat Belmont Park Racecourse, on October 28.

Savage Cabbage rolled onto jockey JASON OLIVER.

The brother of Melbourne Cup winner DAMIEN OLIVER died of his injuries.

Savage Cabbage was put down and a urine sample revealed Phenylbutazone, a common anti-inflammatorydrug, that Australian racing horses are not allowed to compete with.

Mr WOLFE has admitted the horse was given Phenylbutazone to reduce swelling in oneof its legs after it kicked a side-railing five days earlier.

An appeal against the stewards' findings has been lodged.

But Mr WOLFE'S lawyer, TOM PERCY, QC, says it will take months and the ban needs tobe lifted temporarily so his client can make a living.
